The main purpose of a zinc rich primer is to protect metal from corrosion caused by moisture, oxygen, salts, and other aggressive environmental conditions. When steel is exposed to air and moisture, an electrochemical reaction can occur, leading to rust. Zinc acts as a sacrificial metal because it is more chemically active than steel. When the coating is damaged or scratched, the zinc preferentially corrodes instead of the underlying steel. This process, known as cathodic protection, helps extend the service life of the metal structure.
